The course is focused on theoretical sessions followed by break-out sessions, to discuss phenotypic features of specific species in small groups. It provides in-depth training on the diagnostics, clinical relevance, and health impact of anaerobic bacteria. Despite comprising over 95% of the human commensal microbiome, anaerobes are often underrecognized due to culturing challenges and outdated assumptions about antibiotic susceptibility. The course addresses emerging antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and the critical role of anaerobes in infectious diseases, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively work with this important group of organisms.
