Anaerobic bacteria: search and you shall find

Event Description

22 - 23 October 2026
Online
Online

The course combines focused theoretical lectures with hands-on practical sessions in the afternoons. It provides in-depth training on the diagnostics, clinical relevance, and health impact of anaerobic bacteria. Despite comprising over 95% of the human commensal microbiome, anaerobes are often underrecognized due to culturing challenges and outdated assumptions about antibiotic susceptibility. The course addresses emerging antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and the critical role of anaerobes in infectious diseases, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively work with this important group of organisms.

Intended audience:

The course is open for ID and CM professionals, researchers and technicians

Objectives:

  • Increase knowledge of the clinical relevance of anaerobic bacteria
  • Assess and prioritize anaerobes in specific infectious diseases
  • Culture, recognize, and phenotypically identify anaerobic bacteria
  • Perform and interpret antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)
  • Understand the impact of antimicrobial resistance on antibiotic choice
  • Apply genomics and MALDI-TOF MS for accurate identification and characterization

Course coordinator:

Alida C.M. Veloo, Groningen, Netherlands

Organisers:

ESGAI - Anaerobic Infections

Accreditation:

ESCMID office will apply for EACCME accreditation.
Each participant can only receive the number of credits according to actual participation in the event and upon completion of the feedback survey.

Certification:

Course organisers will monitor attendance. Only participants attending sessions will be able to receive the certification.
