Primary care accounts for a substantial proportion of antimicrobial prescribing and presents particular challenges for antimicrobial stewardship, including diagnostic uncertainty, patient expectations and established prescribing behaviours. Understanding these factors is essential to designing interventions that can effectively change practice. This two-day advanced module uses primary care as a key setting to explore the design, implementation and evaluation of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) interventions through a behaviour change approach. Participants will examine how to identify target behaviours and the factors influencing them, translate these findings into context-specific interventions, and select appropriate measures to evaluate their impact.
The course combines clinical discussion with practical workshops focused on evidence-based AMS strategies, including audit and feedback and diagnostic stewardship. Although primary care remains an important focus, the principles and methods explored throughout the module are applicable across healthcare settings and will be discussed in the context of the challenges faced by participants in their own institutions. As the final module of the Latin American Certificate in Antimicrobial Stewardship Programmes, the course places particular emphasis on implementation. Participants will apply the concepts discussed during the module to practical intervention-design exercises and to their own institutional AMS projects, with dedicated time for discussion and feedback from faculty and peers.
Intended audience:
This module is restricted to participants enrolled in the Latin American Certificate in Antimicrobial Stewardship Programmes (ESCMID Foundation / SLIPE): physicians, pharmacists, clinical microbiologists and other healthcare professionals from Latin America involved in antimicrobial stewardship and currently developing an institutional AMS implementation project as part of the certificate.
Objectives:
Apply intervention-design principles to primary care and other real-world AMS challenges, including their own institutional projects.
