Expanding the horizon: Frontiers in managing classical and emerging hepatitis viruses

Event Description

This postgraduate course will cover the clinical and public health management of classical and emerging hepatitis viruses, including hepatitis A–E and viral hemorrhagic fevers such as yellow fever, dengue, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. Through interactive lectures and real-life case discussions, participants will explore diagnostic challenges, treatment strategies, and prevention approaches, with special focus on complex patient groups such as immunocompromised individuals and transplant recipients. The course will also address integration of hepatitis services into health systems and future policy directions.

Intended audience: 

This course is intended for infectious diseases specialists, hepatologists, transplant physicians, clinical microbiologists, and internal medicine specialists involved in the care of patients with viral hepatitis and related infections.
It is also suitable for trainees, early-career researchers, and public health professionals interested in viral liver diseases.

Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Analyze the epidemiology and clinical spectrum of classical and emerging hepatitis viruses, including HAV–HEV and viral hemorrhagic fevers.
2. Interpret diagnostic test results and evaluate their role in the timely identification of viral hepatitis in complex patient populations.
3. Differentiate treatment strategies for hepatitis viruses in immunocompromised hosts, including transplant recipients and patients with advanced liver disease.
4. Apply evidence-based approaches to the management of hepatitis A–E in various clinical scenarios.
5. Critically assess current prevention strategies, including vaccination and post-exposure prophylaxis, in high-risk populations.
6. Design integrated care models that incorporate viral hepatitis screening, treatment, and follow-up into routine health services.
7. Summarize current policy directions and propose potential improvements for viral hepatitis control and elimination efforts.
8. Actively engage in collaborative case-based discussions and contribute real-world clinical experiences to enhance shared decision-making in viral hepatitis management.
