Implant infections: focus on prosthetic joint and fracture-related infections

This two-day postgraduate course focuses on the diagnosis, management, and prevention of implant-associated infections, with a special emphasis on Prosthetic Joint Infections (PJI) and Fracture-Related Infections (FRI). Participants will gain a multidisciplinary perspective, combining expertise from infectious diseases, microbiology, and orthopaedic surgery. The program integrates lectures, panel discussions, case-based learning, debates, and interactive polls to foster practical decision-making skills relevant to high-resource and low- to middle-income settings.

Objectives:

  • Describe the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and classification systems for PJI and FRI.
  • Apply current diagnostic criteria, including microbiological, histopathological, and imaging modalities.
  • Select optimal surgical and antimicrobial strategies tailored to patient and infection characteristics.
  • Interpret complex and culture-negative cases using a structured diagnostic approach.
  • Recognise common pitfalls in diagnosis and treatment and implement strategies to avoid them.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary management and decision-making for implant infections.
