Implementation of New Rapid Diagnostic and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Methods for Bloodstream Infections

Event Description

15 - 17 October 2025
Istanbul, Türkiye
Onsite

ESCMID Foundation Course:

In the recent years, numerous new laboratory tests have been developed to decrease the turnaround time and provide rapid results in life-threatening conditions such as bloodstream infections (BSIs).In this three-day course, participants will be introduced to new rapid diagnostics and antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods for BSIs, perform many of these tests through hands-on training sessions and discuss the results for correct interpretation and troubleshooting. Furthermore, through case-based teaching in small groups, the participants will learn how to implement these new methods into their own practice and be able to test their knowledge throughout the course and receive direct feedback from experts on the field.

Intended audience:

Clinical Microbiologists, Infectious Diseases Specialists, Public Health Specialists and Bioinformaticians who would like an Introduction and an update on how to use metagenomics in routine clinical microbiology.

Objectives:

  • List the most common pathogens causing bloodstream infections (BSIs) and to describe how antimicrobial resistance poses a challenge in the treatment of BSI.
  • Obtain a practical understanding of the principles of novel rapid techniques used in bloodstream infection (BSI) diagnostics.
  • Identify the clinical implications of expedited procedures for organism identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).
  • Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of recent identification and AST techniques in clinical practice.
  • Build the competence to perform the EUCAST rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (RAST) method and interpret its results.
  • Describe a programme for effective implementation and use of these novel rapid techniques from the perspectives of diagnostic stewardship, antimicrobial stewardship and infection control.
