Travel and migrant related hot topics in the Central and Eastern European region

Event Description

13 - 14 May 2026

The course focuses on the evolving landscape of infectious diseases in South and Central-Eastern Europe, regions increasingly affected by factors such as migration, travel, and changing socioeconomic conditions. Drawing on clinical evidence and field experience, the course will examine how population movements influence disease epidemiology, the heightened risk of outbreaks in crisis-affected areas, and the limitations of conventional infectious disease control strategies in these contexts. Emphasis will be placed on diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and the integration of innovative tools to enhance infectious disease response and healthcare delivery. Participants will also examine regional preparedness, antimicrobial resistance trends, and opportunities for strengthening infectious disease surveillance and care pathways (including cross-border clinical collaboration) in mobile and underserved populations.

Intended audience:

The course is open for ID and CM professionals, young investigators, MDs from the CEE region, and MDs working with migrants and travellers.

Objectives:

  • Describe the epidemiological trends of travel- and migration-associated infectious diseases in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Identify key infectious risks among migrant populations, including vaccine-preventable, imported, emerging and re-emerging diseases.
  • Learn to apply appropriate diagnostic and screening strategies for infections commonly encountered in mobile or underserved populations.
  • Identify prevention challenges and review up-to-date prevention and risk mitigation strategies in traveller and migrant populations.
  • Recognise the clinical presentations and management approaches for infections imported through travel or migration.
  • To discuss antimicrobial resistance patterns associated with cross-border mobility and their implications for clinical practice.
  • Contextualise the role and application of the One Health approach in travel and migration medicine
  • To explore opportunities for cross-border collaboration and regional capacity-building in infectious diseases care and prevention.
